There are many very good diaper pails on the market right now. They range in price quite a lot from around $15 and all the way up to $90. The reason for the big difference in price is mainly to do with what the pails are actually made from.
You can buy a basic plastic pail for the lower end price point, and then they have diaper pail systems, that are made from steel, contain carbon filters and come with refill bags.
The good news is that there is something out there for every budget. Below I have reviewed the Top 10 that are currently available in the market place. Hopefully you will find that useful, and allow you to see what options are available.
Diaper pails have been designed to keep the smell of soiled diapers out of the nursery or any room where the pail may be located. The reality is that when babies are very young this is not a huge problem. The odor control is in my opinion more important when the babies start to take solid food. That is when you really need good odor control.
The video below does a really good job of explaining the options available. Underneath the video, I have then done reviews on the most popular choices that are available as of today.
I would also recommend that no matter which type of pail you get, that it is worth giving it a good clean with a little bleach once a week, just to take care of any build up of bacteria.
Safety 1st Easy Saver Diaper Pail
This one uses standard plastic bags so need to go out and buy specific types of refill bags. It costs around $30 and online buyers have given this one an average 78% buyer satisfaction rating. It is a very basic one, but it will do the job. It contains an odor disc which has been designed to help control any smells.
This one also has a lid which is easy to open. So in summary this one is inexpensive, allows you to use any type of trash bag, is simple to change the bags and has an odor disc that is easy to change. The more expensive diaper pails have more features, but this one does the job and controls most of the odours.
Playtex Diaper Genie Elite Pail System
This “Diaper Genie” really does get a lot of press and has been heavily advertised. At Amazon right now this one is available for around $30. So what is this product really all about? The manufacturers guarantee full odor lock protection. They have a carbon filter which attaches to the lid and it is this which absorbs any odors in the nursery.
It is opened by pushing a pedal and then you drop the diaper in. The system comes with 100 refills, a filter case and a single carbon filter which will need replaced over time. According to the manufacturer each refill bag can hold up to 38 new born size diapers.
- Ergonomic design with foot pedal allows for easy, hygienic , hands-free opening
- No Bending – The Tallest pail yet!
- Ultimate Odor Lock System – using a safe, naturally activated carbon filter to absorb strong odors
- Double Lock Pail Design
So that is what this genie system is supposed to do.
According to buyers online and at other Forums they rate this diaper pail system with an 84% buyer satisfaction rating. That is a good rating, considering the number of reviews this product has received. What I did find interesting is that many people also use this one for dog poo, something I would never have imagined.
Some of the more advanced systems need plugged into a power source to work, but this one does not. Overall most buyers are really happy with this product. Yes you will have to buy refills and the odd carbon filter. The bottom line is that you are paying this to have the convenience of quick disposal and having your room odor free.
Munchkin Arm and Hammer Diaper Pail
This pail costs around $65 and buyers have rated this one at 82% buyer satisfaction. To control the odors this one uses the old fashioned method of good old baking soda.

It was interesting that buyers who had used the Diaper Genie seemed to prefer this one. That is because they found it a lot easier to change the bags. Some also said that this one does not have a foot pedal and wished they had included this. With this one you have to close the lid but almost all reviewers said it did a super job of keeping the odors away.
One reviewer said this which sums this one up rather well;
So, in terms of reducing diaper stink without having to take each and every dirty diaper out of the house as it’s removed from the baby’s backside, this is a winner. In terms of basic usability, well, it needs a foot pedal.
Diaper Dekor Diaper Disposal System
This one is close to $44, but there have been a lot of buyers. Overall they rate this one at 4 out of 4 stars so not as good as either the Playtex one or the Munchkin one that I have mentioned above. I agree that it looks really good and yes it does have a foot pedal.
Opinion is really divided on this one with some buyers absolutely loving it and others hating it. Some people says it does a great job of containing odors and others say it does not. It is always interesting to see divided opinion such as this, and how much people can differ on a product.
You can read those divided reviews over at Amazon by clicking here.
Ubbi Steel Diaper Pail
At almost $80 this is one of the most expensive on the market right now. There are almost 700 buyer reviews at Amazon so clearly thousands of people are buying this product. It gets an average rating of 4.2 out of 5 stars. This one is expensive as it made of powder coated steel, and uses good quality rubber seals to keep the odors in.
The good news with this one is that it will take any type of bag so you can avoid buying manufacturer style refills.
Many people use this one to hold their cloth diapers. This one does a very good job at containing odors and all buyers have agreed on that.
It is also really easy to operate.
I think with all of the diaper pail systems that steel and rubber seals will always work the best at containing odors. The question will be is it worth the extra expenditure.
There is certainly no doubt that having a diaper pail is a good idea. I have read a lot about these and the general consensus from Moms is that the plastic ones do not do a great job of odor control. That said, it does save countless journeys to the waste disposal.
The steel ones do a much better job, but you do have to spend a lot more money. So the things that you should consider are of course how much you can afford to spend. Diaper changes in the middle of the night are certainly worth considering. Let’s be honest you simply want to get the diaper change done and get back to bed.
Anything that makes the disposal easier is a good thing. Locks are important if you have toddlers as they will find these pails and they will open them. I know that from my own experience so I prefer some type of latch system. Now of course many people simply use scented diaper bags and dispose of those and that is perfectly fine.
There is a bit more work involved and a pail will give you a bit more convenience if you are willing to pay the price.
